Simple low calorie applesauce recipe
Applesauce has been a staple ingredient in my low calorie baked goods and therefor my weight loss journey. Thislow calorie applesauce recipe is super simple, low calorie and sugar-free. Plus, it is so much better than the store bought versions as it contains just 3 ingredients!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how much I adore applesauce. I use it in so many recipes and it is the perfect substitute for butter, eggs and oil. It adds moisture and a delicious tangy yet sweet flavor. It is also mild enough that small quantities don’t affect the taste of the final product. I could go on and on about how great it is, but you need to try it for yourself and you’ll understand!

This recipe is super simple and requires just 3 ingredients. It is probably one of the easiest things to make – like ever! You can also use any apples you like and get a different flavor profile every time. For a tangier flavor profile, I suggest granny smith apples and for a sweeter flavor profile, my go-to is pink lady apples. And the best part is, this applesauce tastes so much better than store bought – what’s not to love?
Once you have applesauce, the world is really your oyster. You can make these low calorie cookies, make the filling for these low calorie cinnamon rolls or make this low calorie carrot cake loaf. Really and truly, you can use it in any recipe to replace high calorie ingredients like butter and oil. Plus, applesauce is a vegan alternative to these ingredients which works great to replace dairy and eggs.

To make this low calorie applesauce, you will need:
Apples – You can opt for any apples you would like. My personal favorite and the ones I find myself going back to time and time again are Granny Smith apples. They are so tangy yet sweet and just add the perfect texture to my low calorie cookies. I also like to use pink lady apples for a sweeter version of this recipe. Just ensure your apples are nice and crisp!
Lemon juice – Lemon juice is a great accompaniment to applesauce. Not only to cut the sweetness a little but it is also great for the longevity of the applesauce. It helps it stay fresh for longer and prevents the apples from browning.

How to make low calorie applesauce
- Peel and dice the apples. The smaller the chunks, the quicker it will cook.
- In a medium saucepan, add the apple chunks, water and lemon juice and mix to combine. Place on the stove over medium heat and cover. Cook the apples for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes in the saucepan.
- Using a potato masher, mash the applesauce until smooth and lump-free. Alternatively, you can use a blender to speed up the process.
- Once the applesauce is smooth, set aside and cool completely.
- Transfer the cooled applesauce to a jar with an airtight lid and refrigerate.
That’s it! It really is as simple as mixing ingredients in a saucepan, cooking on medium heat and going to town with a potato masher!
