RECIPE DETAILS
This recipe is definitely one of my favorite classic low calorie dessert recipes. It is just the perfect quick dessert or snack. Rarely do we have time to make a complicated, multi-step recipe when craving something sweet. This recipe is super easy to make, it’s quick and convenient.
What I’ve noticed about low calorie cakes and bakes in general, is that decreased calories usually mean there will be a compromise in taste or texture. My mission is to make low calorie goods that still taste delicious and have a great texture.
Taste – This mug cake tastes like a mini chocolate cake. The cake itself is super rich and chocolaty with a delicious melted chocolate center.
Texture – This chocolate mug cake has a very soft and fluffy texture.
Effort – As with most mug cakes, the effort required to make this chocolate mug cake is very minimal. It is so easy to make! The cake itself only requires 1 minute to make and less than 5 minutes to prep.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
You only need 3 kitchen tools to make this delicious low calorie chocolate mug cake:
- Your favorite microwaveable mug or a small ramekin
- A fork or small whisk
- A set of measuring spoons
INGREDIENTS
Exact ingredient quantities can be found at the bottom of this page.
- All-purpose flour – This recipe works best with regular plain or AP flour. I have yet to try it with any other flour but if you’re looking for a gluten free alternative, gluten free all-purpose flour would work.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder is low in calories as it doesn’t contain any added sugars.
- Stevia – This recipe is sugar free and is sweetened with Stevia. Stevia is a naturally sourced 0 calorie sugar alternative. Any granulated sweetener will work for this recipe. You can also substitute it for regular white sugar or brown sugar.
- Baking powder – Baking powder helps this mug cake rise and gives it a lovely soft, fluffy texture.
- Oil – A little oil is required to give the mug cake a soft and moist texture. Any oil will work for this recipe, I like to use olive oil.
- Unsweetened almond milk – Unsweetened almond milk is very low in calories. You can substitute for any milk of your choice but the calories will change slightly.

99 Calorie Chocolate Mug Cake
Equipment
- Mug or small ramekin
- Fork or small whisk
- Measuring spoons
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp plain/all-purpose flour*
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp stevia or 0 calorie granulated sweetener
- ¼ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp olive oil or oil of choice
- 3 tbsp unsweetened almond milk* +1 tbsp for topping (optional)
- 1-2 g chocolate chips (optional)
This recipe is absolutely amazing, I sadly am out of both Stevia and Almond Milk so I had to replace those with regular granulated sugar and 2% Milk. Which brought the calories up to around 160 instead of 99, which is still pretty good as some recipes out there are 300+ ! So this is way easier to fit into my calorie deficit. This cake satisfied my cravings and sweet tooth, I recommend trying this!! I think It would also taste great with some ice cream on top, definitely going to make this again, especially once I buy more ice cream, would prob taste amazing with the caramel halo top.
Hi Daisy, I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe!! It definitely is made better with some ice cream!
The recipe lists 2 tbsp of stevia…is that correct? It seems like a lot of sweetener for one serving?
Hi Janine, it depends on the stevia you’re using. The one I used for this recipe isn’t extremely sweet and is a 1:1 ratio of stevia to sugar. If your stevia says for every x grams or tbsp of sugar, replace with x amount of stevia, go with that! Hope that helps!
Will be recommending and making again.)) Easy to make and yum. Portion is also convenient. Appreciate it!
