To make this low calorie date milkshake you will need:
- Dates – Dates are naturally very sweet which works great for making sweet smoothies without the need for any added sugars. I used Medjoul dates for this recipe but any variation of dates will work.
- Oats – Oats work very well to add more fibre and create a filling shake.
- Nut butter – I used almond butter for this recipe but you can use any nut butter you like. Peanut butte also works really well for this recipe.
- Unsweetened almond milk – To keep the calories low, I like to use unsweetened almond milk. You can use any milk you would like here whether it be another plant based milk or dairy milk. The calories will change slightly so bear that in mind.
- Honey – Honey is another great natural sweetener. It is a great source of antioxidants too. You can choose to leave this out if you would prefer.
- Ground cinnamon – Cinnamon adds warmth to this shake. You can choose to leave it out or switch it for another spice like ginger or nutmeg.
- Ice – Lots of ice to thicken this milkshake. If you would prefer not to use ice, you can just use less milk or add a frozen banana to thicken.
How to make a low calorie date milkshake
This recipe is so quick and easy it requires just one single step!
- Add all of your ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
Top tips
Use a high speed blender – To get a super smooth and creamy milkshake, I recommend using a high speed blender. This will ensure there are no lumps of date or broken off pieces of ice. If you don’t have a high speed blender, use a banana instead of the ice and mix between blitzes.
Mix in some fruit – Adding fruit to this milkshake is a great way to get some additional nutrients in. Berries and banana are my favorite fruits to add to this shake.
Soak the dates in hot water – If you’re not using a high speed blender, it may be a little tricky to get the dates to blend. You can soak the dates in hot water for 10 minutes to soften them and make them easier to blend.
