To make these low calorie cinnamon roll muffins you will need:
Plain/all-purpose flour – This recipe calls for good ‘ol plain/all-purpose flour. You can opt for gluten-free flour here to make these muffins gluten-free.
Stevia – Any sweetener will work for this recipe but my personal favorite for low calorie baking will always be stevia. Be mindful of the conversion here, the stevia I use is a 1:2 ratio with sugar so if the one you use is a 1:1 ratio, you will need to double the amount you use.
Baking powder – To help the muffins rise.
Egg – This recipe calls for just 1 large egg. Make sure that your egg is at room temperature and not cold. You can set an egg on your kitchen counter for 30 minutes to get it to room temperature if it’s been in the fridge.
Full-fat yogurt – This recipe calls for full-fat yogurt and not fat-free or 0% fat yogurt. As there is no butter or oil in this recipe, there is very little fat to keep the muffins moist and plump. I wouldn’t recommend going with fat-free yogurt as the muffins can come out dry. You can opt for low-fat yogurt in a pinch but the calorie difference is so minimal I would just go for full-fat!
Unsweetened almond milk – This recipe calls for unsweetened almond milk as it has the lowest amount of calories. Any milk will work here but the calories will differ between milks so keep that in mind.
Vanilla extract – A dash of vanilla is staple in any muffin recipe!
Ground cinnamon – To create the cinnamon swirl.
Unsweetened applesauce – To make the cinnamon swirl you’ll need a little applesauce. Applesauce is super low in calories and works great to replace butter. You can opt for reduced fat butter here if you don’t have any applesauce available, the calories will differ though.
Philadelphia lightest cream cheese – What’s a cinnamon roll muffin without the frosting? Philadelphia lightest cream cheese is super low in calories whilst still being creamy. If you are unable to get your hands on it, you can opt for light cream cheese which will add a few extra calories. For a vegan alternative, use vegan cream cheese.
0 calorie icing sugar – A small amount of icing sugar to sweeten the cream cheese frosting. You can also use regular icing sugar here but the calories will be a little higher.

Notes
Substitutions
- Stevia – The stevia I use is twice as sweet as sugar so I use half the amount of sugar this recipe would requires (70g). If the sweetener you use is a 1:1 ratio to sugar then you would use 70g. Adjust the amount of sweetener according to the sweetener you’re using and its ratio to sugar.
- Unsweetened almond milk – I use unsweetened almond milk as it is super low in calories. You can use any milk you prefer, 2% milk is the best alternative calorie wise.
- All-purpose / Plain flour – I used regular AP flour but you can use gluten-free or wholewheat flour if you would like.
