This chocolate mousse is made the classic French way with fresh eggs, good quality chocolate and chilling in the fridge for a smooth, creamy and firm mousse. Chocolate mousse was always one of those desserts that I found to be too intimidating to make. From separating the egg to tempering chocolate – it just seemed to have too many things that could go wrong. Plus, you can find a low calorie chocolate mousse at any supermarket so why bother with all the work?
Don’t get me wrong, a 200 calorie supermarket chocolate mousse is a great sweet treat when the craving hits and you need it immediately but trust me when I say, it is a million times better when you make it yourself! Using good quality ingredients and having it be homemade genuinely tastes so much better. Plus, it’s really not as difficult to make as it may seem.

Low calorie chocolate mousse
Airy, smooth and super chocolaty, this low calorie chocolate mousse is the perfect dessert to really indulge in when in a calorie deficit. There is no need to miss out on delicious treats just because you’re trying to lose weight! This chocolate mousse may not be the easiest dessert to make but if you have a little extra time, it is a perfect way to satisfy your chocolate cravings without feeling like you’re missing out on anything.
It has the perfect texture. This mousse is very similar to that of traditional chocolate mousse with a very airy, delicate and smooth mouth-feel. The only difference between this low calorie chocolate mousse and traditional chocolate mousse is that this recipe produces a slightly less firm mousse. That is down to the use of yogurt instead of double cream.

To make this low calorie chocolate mousse you will need:
Egg – The egg is the binding agent for the mousse. The egg whites are the base which provide the fluffy mousse texture and the yolk contains healthy fats which bind everything together giving a delicious thick mousse. Make sure your egg is pasteurised so you don’t get sick!
Stevia– Any granulated sweetener would work for this recipe. Personally, I love to use Stevia in my low calorie recipes. It is naturally sourced and tastes very similar to sugar.
0% fat greek yogurt – The yogurt is replacing the double cream used in traditional mousse recipes. Double cream is really high in fat which keeps the mousse super thick. 0% fat greek yogurt is thick and acts as a great replacement.
Unsweetened Cocoa powder – The unsweetened cocoa powder adds a deep and intense chocolate flavor to the mousse. Use a really good quality cocoa powder to elevate your mousse from good to great.
Dark chocolate – Dark chocolate is the best chocolate for a mousse as it is rich and contains the highest percentage of cocoa solids. This is great for taste as well as texture of the mousse.

What to do if pasteurized egg isn’t available?
Hi Abbie, unfortunately unpasteurised egg is unsafe to eat so you wouldn’t be able to use that! There are lots of egg-free mousse recipes and I’m looking into creating a low calorie one soon so hopefully thats more suited to you!
