To make the best low calorie chocolate donuts you will need:
Egg – This recipe calls for one, room temperature egg. To quickly get a refrigerated egg to room temperature, submerge into a bowl of warm water for at least 10 minutes.
Stevia – Any 0 calorie granulated sweetener will work for this recipe. Stevia is my personal favorite as it’s a natural sweetener and behaves very similarly to sugar in baked goods.
0% fat greek yogurt – For added moisture. You can use any fat-free yogurt but greek yogurt is thicker than most other yogurts and gives the best texture. Opt for a dairy-free yogurt to make this recipe dairy-free.
Unsweetened almond milk – Any milk will work but unsweetened almond milk is super low in calories.
Vanilla extract – Who doesn’t love a dash of vanilla?
Plain/all-purpose flour – You can sub for gluten-free flour or oat flour too.
Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder is the secret to getting that dark, intense chocolate flavor without any added sugars or calories.
Raising agents – This recipe uses both baking powder and baking soda for the perfectly risen, fluffy donuts.
0 calorie icing sugar – For the frosting. You can use regular icing sugar but the calories will differ.

How to make low calorie chocolate donuts
- Pre-heat oven to 180°C (356°F).
- Make the glaze by whisking together the yogurt, 0 calorie icing sugar and cocoa powder in a medium bowl until smooth. Set aside in the fridge.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together the egg and stevia until light and fluffy. Add the milk, yogurt and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
- Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda and mix well to combine.
- Transfer the batter to a piping bag, snip off the end and pipe the batter evenly between a 6-count silicone donut mould. Transfer to the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into either side of the donut comes out clean. Allow them to cool in the mould for a few minutes before glazing.
- Dip the donuts in the glaze and place on a cooling rack, glaze side up. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Top tips
Don’t over-mix the batter – Be careful when mixing the batter and avoid over-mixing as this can lead to tough, dry donuts. Mix until everything is just combined and no more. It’s better to be left with a few lumps in the batter and soft donuts than smooth batter and tough donuts!
Use room temperature ingredients – Room temperature ingredients incorporate better and that means no over-mixing!
Make sure the donuts are cool before glazing– Allow the donuts to cool completely before adding the glaze. If you add the glaze to warm donuts, it will just melt off! Allow the donuts to cool on a cooling rack until they are cool to the touch.

Storage
Once these donuts have cooled, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. The glaze can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
