To make the best low calorie chocolate donuts you will need:
- Plain/all-purpose flour – This recipe calls for plain old all-purpose or plain flour. For a gluten-free alternative, use gluten-free flour or oat flour.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder is the secret to getting that dark, intense chocolate flavor without any added sugars or calories.
- Stevia or granulated sweetener – Any granulated sweetener will work for this recipe. Stevia is my personal favorite and is the closest in taste to sugar.
- Baking powder – Baking powder helps the donuts rise and get that fluffy, cake-like texture.
- Fat-free yogurt – Fat-free yogurt adds moisture to these low calorie chocolate donuts whilst keeping the calories super low.
- Egg – This recipe calls for just 1 small egg. It provides structure and helps the donuts keep their shape.
- Vanilla extract – No donut recipe is complete without a dash of vanilla!
- Unsweetened almond milk – Unsweetened almond milk is super low in calories which works great for this recipe. Any milk will work but the calories may differ.
- 0 calorie icing sugar – 0 calorie icing sugar keeps this recipe sugar-free. If you don’t have any 0 calorie icing sugar to hand, regular icing sugar works too but it adds a few extra calories.
How to make low calorie chocolate donuts
- Pre-heat oven to 180°C (356°F).
- Using an electric hand whisk, beat together the egg and stevia until light and fluffy. Whisk in the yogurt, milk and vanilla extract before folding in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder until well combined.
- Transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe the batter into a 6-count silicone donut mold. A silicone donut mold doesn’t need any greasing and therefore no extra calories from butter or oil!
- Bake the donuts for 10-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Make the glaze by mixing together the yogurt, 0 calorie icing sugar and cocoa powder until smooth. Let the donuts cool completely before dipping them in the glaze.
Top tips
Don’t over-mix the batter – Be careful when mixing the batter and avoid over-mixing as this can lead to tough, dry donuts.
Use room temperature ingredients – Ensure the eggs, milk and yogurt are at room temperature before use. This helps the donuts bake evenly.
Make sure the donuts are cool before glazing– Allow the donuts to cool completely before adding the glaze. Warm donuts will lead to the glaze melting and dripping off the donuts.
Storage
Once these donuts have cooled, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. The glaze can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To store glazed donuts, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
