To make this low calorie hot chocolate you will need:
- Unsweetened almond milk – Unsweetened almond milk is really low in calories making it perfect for low calorie drinks. You can swap for any milk of your choice but the calories will be different.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder has an intense chocolaty flavor with very little calories. This is the perfect way to get that ultra rich, luxurious chocolaty flavor without overdoing it with the sugar or calories.
- 0 calorie sweetener– You can use any granulated sweetener for this recipe. This brown sugar alternative has been my favorite 0 calorie sweetener for hot drinks lately. It is naturally sourced, tastes delicious and has no bitter aftertaste!
- Whip cream – This is also optional. You can use low fat whip cream or scroll down to see a very easy and low calorie whip cream alternative.
- Sprinkle of salt – This is optional but highly recommended!
How to make this low calorie hot chocolate
- Place the stevia and cocoa powder in a small saucepan and whisk until well combined.
- Add in the milk, whisk again to combine. Make sure the cocoa powder is mixed in and not sitting at the bottom.
- Set on the stove over medium-high heat, continuing to whisk until it starts to gently simmer. About 3-5 minutes.
- Serve immediately with any toppings of your choice and enjoy!
LOW CALORIE ‘WHIP’ CREAM
If you’re someone who loves adding whip cream to their hot cocoa, this is a perfect super low calorie alternative. It is made with steamed milk and adds an extra layer of creaminess and really elevates this hot chocolate!
- Warm up 50 ml of any milk of your choosing, make sure it is piping hot.
- Using a milk frother, whisk the milk until its super foamy and thick – that’s it!
This ‘whip cream’ will add 6 calories if you use unsweetened almond milk, 24 calories with semi-skimmed or 2% fat milk and 31 calories with whole milk.

Ingredients
- 250 ml unsweetened almond milk
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp 0 calorie sweetener
- pinch of salt optional
Low calorie whip cream
- 50 ml really hot milk of choice
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, mix together the stevia and cocoa powder. Add in the milk and whisk until well combined.
- Set this over medium-high heat on the stove until it has reached a gentle simmer – it will bubble at the edges, about 3-5 minutes. Remember to continue to whisk.
- Transfer to your favorite mug add any toppings you would like and enjoy!
